Cornhole Rules and Scoring

Board dimensions, throwing order and the 1-point / 3-point scoring system for a cornhole round.

Cornhole is played by two players or two teams who take turns throwing fabric bean bags at an inclined board with a hole in its far end. The incline matters: bags slide up the surface and either stop on the board or drop through the hole.

Scoring is a simple split. A bag landing on the board is worth 1 point; a bag going through the hole is worth 3 points. In a round where both sides put bags on the board, each side totals its own bags first and only the difference is recorded, so a round can net zero.

The throwing order alternates between players or teams, and the round ends when both sides have thrown their full set of bags. Match length is set by the point target agreed before play, not by a clock.

Cornhole descends from Parlor Quoits, a game patented by Heyliger de Windt in 1883 — the same inclined-board logic, carried into bag throwing.

For a backyard setup, place the two boards on level ground facing each other, mark the throwing line on each side, and keep a written score sheet so round differences are easy to check.

  • 1 point: bag resting on the board.
  • 3 points: bag through the hole.
  • Round difference only when both sides score.
  • Alternating throwing order between players or teams.
